If the book you are wanting to read is not available in the school library, why not try to borrow it from the City of Greater Dandenong library?  There are two branches you can use, Dandenong and Springvale. Books borrowed from one branch may be returned at the other and they can be borrowed for three weeks and renewed on the  internet.

The Thinking Curriculum

We have decided to teach and use thinking skills to all the children from prep through to year six.
There are a whole range of strategies that we have selected to use with the children.
The children are first taught about the strategy and how to use it. The strategy is then used in English or Maths or Science etc., depending on where it is most suited.
Our key strategy that is at present being taught to all children is De Bono's Six Thinking Hats.

Stop, Think, Do

The Focus of Stop Think Do Programs

Social skills training STOP THINK DO is an Australian cognitive-behavioural social skills training program originally devised almost 3 decades ago . The approach teaches children specific social skills and a process of relating to others so they can make and keep friends. In liaison with educationalists, STOP THINK DO has also been adapted for teaching directly in the classroom as a social skills curriculum with a preventive focus, aiming to improve the friendship skills of all children from a young age to prevent emotional-social-behavioural- friendship problems from developing.

Behaviour management STOP THINK DO is a complementary behaviour management method for teachers and parents. They solve problems and relate with children in their care using the same skills and process that children learn for making friends with their peers.

Motivating learning The STOP THINK DO method has been adapted to improve children’s motivation for academic as well as social learning, including for children with special needs. The primary aims are to develop a supportive learning environment in the classroom, and to teach individuals skills to improve problem areas which are preventing them from reaching their full learning potential. ^

What is it?  - Peer Activity Leaders

At Yarraman our PAL program is focused on year four students as in 2008 they will be able to carry the program through to Year five.
PAL is an initiative that works to:

· Promote physical activity

· Develop social competencies

· Enhance relationships across the school

· Enhance school connectedness

· Provide leadership opportunities

· Develop community partnerships.

Senior students are trained in the PAL program over two full days equipping them with the skills to run activities for junior students at lunchtime.

The program involves partnerships within the  primary and  between primary and secondary schools.

In our program the year four students will be working with the younger classes and Noble Park Secondary students will be working with the year four students.

The program is being run under the guidance of Chris Barry.

Literacy/English

Each day a two hour block of time is set aside for your child to be taught Literacy.
In that time they do handwriting, spelling, reading, writing and speaking and listening.
Lessons will often follow the following pattern:

Step 1: Children are brought together to learn about the skill or task.
Step 2: Children are sent off to complete tasks in groups with a teaching group staying with the teacher.
Step 3: Teacher sets teaching group to work and walks around helping other children.
Step 4: Students are brought together to share their work.

Literacy is also taught over all lessons, as literacy skills are used in all subjects.

Further assistance

Children who are struggling with their reading by grade 1 are given an extra half hour assistance per day from our Reading Recovery teacher Angela Marrinon.

10 minutes extra one-to-one assistance, in reading, comprehension and spelling,  is provided every day by literacy aides for all children from grades 2 to 6 who have difficulties.

Individual learning plans are established for all of the more capable students in Literacy.^

Grade 6 Transition Program

We have established a year-round relationship with Noble Park Secondary College, whereby our students visit the College regularly for lessons in Computers and Science. This enables our students to become familiar with both the environment and the staff in a secondary school setting.  We are also fortunate to have The College's LOTE teacher visit our school once a week for Japanese lessons for our students.
